Introducing Guava Tags: NFC-Powered Health Tracking

August 28, 2024

We’re excited to announce the launch of Guava Tags, our latest physical product here at Guava Health. We built these tags to simplify the health tracking experience, making it as convenient as possible with just the tap of a phone.

What are Guava Tags

Guava Tags are NFC-enabled stickers you can put on anything you’d like to log about your health. You can stick them on medication bottles, dog leashes, coffee makers, or anything that makes sense for you. All the data you log with Guava Tags is used in the Guava app to generate more accurate insights about your health.

Why We Built Them

Guava Tags started as a side project for one of our founding engineers, Awadi, two years ago. When he was asked about his motivation behind building them, he explained

“I wanted to gather data on factors influencing my health, but found it tedious to constantly open the app and log things manually.”

Inspired by what he called “laziness,” Awadi fiddled around with NFC technology and eventually built the very first Guava Tags tailored to his personal health habits. He started with a water bottle and eventually got the whole team on board – placing Guava Tags on medication bottles, food containers, and key chains, all with the simple goal of making logging easier. At some point, we decided that Guava Tags could be just as useful for our users as they’ve been for us.

Who We Built Them For

Guava Tags are built for anyone and everyone who wants to keep a close eye on their health. Whether that’s because you’re into fitness and nutrition or you have a chronic illness that requires intensive management, Guava Tags are built to eliminate a barrier to health tracking.

To ensure Guava Tags would be useful for physicians as well as patients, we spoke to our medical officer, Dr. Kat McGraw, M.D., throughout development to get her thoughts. She brought up just how useful health tracking can be for providers when diagnosing and treating patients. Details about medication adherence or how long ago a symptom started can be powerful informants for deciding how to proceed. But despite its usefulness, health tracking doesn’t come easy to everyone. Dr. McGraw made an important note that

“Patients are humans, and it can be really hard to remember to track meds, activities, and symptoms.”

By reducing the friction around tracking, Guava Tags are meant to make health tracking more accessible for everyone.

Health Tracking Made Accessible

A main driver of our mission at Guava is to ensure that health management is as accessible as possible. Guava Tags bring us one step closer to this goal. They simplify health tracking for those who struggle with forgetfulness by providing a visual, non-digital reminder to log. They also eliminate the number of buttons required to log for those with dexterity issues by making logging a single-tap process. There is still work to be done, however, so feel free to provide feedback on how to make Guava more accessible for you.
